Escape to Sea Lions Cove (Caleta Lobos)
Sea Lions Cove, Caleta Lobos, offers a tranquil retreat away from the vibrant city life of nearby La Paz.
Heading to Sea Lion’s Cove, north to Playa Pichillingue (Pichillingue Beach), as we navigate towards this secluded anchorage, you’ll be greeted by the picturesque sight of Roca Lobos (Sea Lions Rock) and the San Rafaelito Islet Wildlife Sanctuary. The latter is a tiny island where you see sunbathing sea lions and birds marked by a guiding light.

Approaching Sea Lions Cove
Serenity Lives Here
From the north, approaching the Balandra Bay & Beach area, we sail smoothly either mid-channel or opt for a scenic route around the west side of Roca Lobos.
Approaching from the south, we maintain a mid-channel course to ensure a safe distance from the shores. Nearby, we are mindful of the nearby aquaculture operations southwest of the entrance.

Anchoring Amidst Nature
We then dropped anchor in 3 to 5 fathoms (5 – 11 m) of good holding sand within the cove, keeping a close eye on the depth sounder due to the quickly shoaling bay.
While Sea Lion Cove (Caleta Lobos) is sheltered from northerly and southeasterly winds, we watch for the swell during strong northerlies as the cove opens to the southwest. This offers limited protection from nighttime coromuels (southwesterly winds). But then again, we don’t stay overnight, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Adventures Onshore and Offshore
The surrounding sloping hills invite hikers for exploratory treks with stunning vistas. However, be wary of the local bobos. These harmless yet persistent flies can be especially dangerous in calm conditions.
For snorkeling enthusiasts, the rocky shoreline near the northern islet presents an underwater spectacle.
Navigational Insights around Sea Lions Rock
The Sea Lions Rock (Roca Lobos) is a prominent feature 2.3 miles SSW of Punta San Lorenzo (Point San Lorenzo), the entrance to La Paz Bay. While approachable from the west, eastern waters near the rock are best avoided due to hazardous conditions.
