Visiting Balandra Bay from San Lorenzo Canal
Balandra Bay, located approximately five nautical miles south of the San Lorenzo Canal, offers a peaceful retreat with its still ocean waters and stunning natural landscape. This proximity makes it easily accessible for a quick trip from the Canal.
Known for its crystal-clear waters and sheltered coves, Balandra Bay is encircled by scenic desert hills, starkly contrasting the bustling waterways of the canal.
This bay is a favorite for those seeking tranquility and the beauty of untouched nature. It is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the serene environment.
Safe Anchorage and Navigational Tips Entering Balandra Bay
When approaching from the north, we steer clear of the shallows off Punta Tecolote (Tecolote headland), entering mid-channel for a smooth sail.
From the south, we aim mid-channel to bypass the submerged reef marked by a beacon near Punta Diablo (Devil Point).
The bay offers flexible anchorage over a sand bottom. We monitor the depth sounder and favor deeper waters, as much of the bay is too shallow for any boat to enter and anchor in.
Ideal Conditions and Local Activities
Balandra Bay shines in calm conditions or under southerly winds.
We constantly watch for north winds or the nocturnal southwesterly coromuel winds, which can stir the waters uncomfortably.
For the adventurers, Balandra Bay is a paradise for snorkelers, kayakers, hikers, and sunbathers, with its numerous beaches and a snorkeling-friendly rocky reef in the south.
A Hub for Beach Lovers and Gourmets
On the northeastern shore, a parking lot welcomes those driving from La Paz, and the numbers are limited. Yet we enter from the east, from La Paz Bay, making it easy to come and go as we please.
A short hike north leads to Playa Tecolote, a bustling weekend spot and a favorite for campers. Along its sands, small cantinas and restaurants offer a taste of local life with fresh fish tacos, ceviche, and chilled drinks, embodying the relaxed Baja beach lifestyle.
